Meet Surien

Originally from South Africa, Surien has lived in Prairie Canada for nearly 20 years. During her studies in painting at Milan Art Institute, she discovered her love of painting in oils and exploring emotions through shapes and varying brushstrokes. She has been teaching visual arts (specialising in photography) at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba since 2018. She has never stopped exploring creatively in various formats, the creativity of her students stimulates her need to create and keep learning.

“I express myself through abstract art because everyone can find a connection with the work in a different way either by the feelings of the colours used, the suggested shapes or brushstroke energy present. My work is inspired through examining the concepts of human emotions of loss, hope, love, anger, etc. Each of my works invites you to connect to your feelings and gain a deeper understanding of the emotional makeup of your soul.”

Surien has a Therapeutic Art Certification from Transformation Academy (March 2020) and is finishing her studies in the Mastery Program of Milan Art Institute (June 2022). She has her studio at home in rural Manitoba where she exhibits and works.
